Day 6, Day 7, Day 8

Day 6 and 7: On the Boat

Made it on the boat!

Quite a different travel experience- none of us have done a cruise before. With 2 days at sea, we explored every inch of the boat, and ate, and ate, and ATE. So much food, and I am loving not having to plan for dinner every night.




Oh look, rain.

Cruise Lessons:

1. Prepping in advance with paperwork was worth it- made the entry smooth. Read the fine print.

2. Could never have travelled like this with younger kids- they would have made me crazy running all over the boat. They are still running all over the boat, but I just don’t care now #motheroftheyear

3. They tax you on drinks when you are in some ports- they are really good about pointing it out, and you can check your onboard spending on the app.

4. I have “lost” my room card 3 times since day 1. Miles is going on 3 as well. Thankfully they have always turned up or someone ran us down.

5. We found a glitch in the WiFi so we don’t have to pay to communicate with each other, or anyone else who has iPhones. Otherwise it’s almost $200 per person for unlimited WiFi.

Day 8: Sitka, Alaska 

Day 1 off the boat- and while the boys and I went kayaking, Grandma and Charlie did a boat ride looking for wildlife and then had a feast at the lodge. And now we know the entry/exit process for the rest of the week. Now if the weather would cooperate….





The boys and I had time to wander around downtown Sitka (2 lights and 1 roundabout).





We mostly kayaked in the rain. We had tandem kayaks so I met someone from the boat- and Jackie was a GREAT kayak partner! We went exploring and found… a bucket. But, she was willing to wander all over the bay with me and we both stopped often for pics. 












Today’s Lessons:

1. Take the rain gear when it’s offered- it could be pouring on the ride back.

2. Did I only take pictures on one day or is Grandma wearing the same outfit still on cruise day 3? 🤔

3. Sitka has more eagles in one area than I have EVER seen. 



The next 3 days are Alaskan Ports- service is not stellar and we are about 3 hrs behind our regular time, which means limited communication at best, unless you have an iPhone I guess? Still can’t send pics though. 

We will see what the next few days brings!

 Day 9: Juneau, AK Very few words to describe the day. We took a helicopter to a glacier and hiked on it for an hour. No pictures or video will do it justice, but here’s the attempt: We also walked around downtown Juneau until it poured.  Miles and I played Bingo, and a LOT of time was spent in the observation lounge looking at glaciers and the overall scenery. Beautiful.  Then Grandma and I had a fancy Italian dinner, just the two of us. Today’s lessons: 1. Take the shuttle, the boat is further away than you think. 2. Bingo was overpriced- $50 for 6 boards and 3 games… 3. Maybe try looking at the weather in advance and invest in a raincoat?

Day 10, Day 11, Day 12, and Day 13

Hi! We are alive and STILL traveling. Lots of days with no service and pictures refusing to upload… Day 10: Icy Straight Point, AK Hayden, Charlie, and I had an early morning to go on the world’s longest zipline- got a little nervous when we went up the gondola, but wow was it worth it.  (We did that) Miles and Grandma opted out of the ziprider, so they went on a backcountry jeep adventure: complete with mama and baby bears. Miles has a video - but they aren't posting well on here. Walked around the cannery with the kids, then they wanted to head back for lunch. After we ate, I headed back out to wander. Took the nature trail, the beach trail, and ended up seeing the STARFISH I always wanted to see! Today’s Lessons: 1. Go wander. Even if it’s solo. 2. Ziplines are a breeze when you can’t see the bottom through the fog. And then you break through the fog and BAM you can see everything. Super cool. 3: Starfish are equally amazing and creepy. Day 1, Day 2, and the General Itinerary

Day 1: Detroit Lakes, MN A later than usual start... No surprise. Times are just guidelines anyway. 1st destination: Detroit Lakes, MN to see Andy's brother Warren and his wife, Diana. They took us out for a phenomenal pizza dinner at Zorbaz, right on the lake.    Awesome food, really tasty Bloody Mary, and great hospitality/hosts: thank you for having us!!  We were also spoiled with a delicious breakfast before leaving the next day. Day 1 Notes: 1. Nick has a smaller bladder than Andy. So frequent stopping. Might be the gallon of soda he consumes in the back of the car between stops... 2. Already pretty sure this will be an adventure. Day 2: Driving, and More Driving.  Destination: Glacier National Park We saw a lot of things on the road today: wild horses, antelope (or something similar), birds, and the inside of several pharmacies.
